Design of the 1 Ounce American Eagle Gold Coin
Each gold American Eagle features an image of Lady Liberty on the front. She carries a torch in one hand, and an olive branch in the other. The sun is rising behind her, and her dress and hair blow in the wind. The coin is encircled by 50 stars representing the 50 states of America. The top of the coin features the word 'Liberty', and to the right of her image is the year of minting.
The reverse of the coin features an image of a male Bald Eagle carrying branches back to his nest in his talons. A female Eagle is sitting in the nest, protecting her eggs. To the left and right of the images are the words 'E Pluribus Unum', and 'In God We Trust'. At the top of the coin, the words 'United States of America' is inscribed. The bottom of the coin featurs the coin's weight, purity, and legal tender value. Each coin has a face value of $50 USD.
Each American Eagle gold coin contains 1 ounce of 99.9% pure investment grade gold bullion. The coin is currently manufactured in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz sizes.
History of the American Eagle Gold Coin
The American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin was introduced into the bullion market in 1986. Due to American currency laws, all gold American Eagle coins are required to be minted from gold that has been mined within the United States. The coin was popular instantly, and has since been released in both silver and platinum.
