Design of the 1 Ounce 2022 Platinum Canadian Maple Leaf
The platinum Maple Leaf coin features an image of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. The portrait depicted of Her Majesty was originally made by Ian Rank-Broadley, and is used on all Canadian legal tender bullion coins. At the top of her profile is her name ‘ Elizabeth II’, and at the bottom is the coin’s face value of $50 CAD, and the coin’s year of minting, which is 2022.
The reverse side of each coin features the iconic image of a Canadian Maple Leaf, which is the national symbol of Canada. The top of the coin says ‘CANADA’. The bottom of the coin features its size of 1 Ounce ,and its purity and metal type, which is 9995 fine platinum. There is also a small Canadian Maple Leaf hallmark or privy to the right of the main image, which acts as a security feature to prevent counterfeiting. This small privy says the number ’22’ when looked at under a magnifying glass.
The Canadian Maple Leaf Series
The Canadian Maple Leaf series was launched in 1979 by the government of Canada in response to the growing popularity of investment bullion by private and retail investors. This demand was first met by the krugerrand coin, which by 1980 was minting 3,000,000 coins per year. However, due to Apartheid, demand of these coins wained starting in 1980. The Canadian Maple Leaf was one of the first to fill the gap in the market, and has remained popular worldwide since then. Today the Maple Leaf is available in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Platinum coins are available in the 1 Ounce size only, however, gold Maple Leafs are also available in fractional sizes.
