Design of the 1 Ounce Silver Perth Mint Lunar Rabbit Coin

The Perth Mint Lunar Rabbit silver bullion coin is part of the Lunar series which is a series of 12 coins issued annually in line with the Chinese lunar calendar. The coin series is one of the most popular issued by the Australian based mint, and the 2023 issue coin honours the Year of the Rabbit with a depiction of a Rabbit on the back of the coin.

The front of each coin features an image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the front. The words ‘Elizabeth II’ and ‘Australia’ appear at the top of the coin. The bottom of the coin features the coin’s purity of 9999, its weight of 1 ounce, and its face value. Each coin has a legal tender value of 1 AUD, and it is backed by the government of Australia to that value. Because Australia is part of the Commonwealth, all coins with a legal tender value feature an image of the Queen on the front. Due to the Queen’s death in 2022, this will likely be the final year that the Queen features on the coin, as her portrait will be replaced by one of King Charles III.

The reverse side of the coin features an image of two rabbits standing in a field. One is sitting still, and the other is standing on his hind legs while eating berries off of a branch. The word ‘Rabbit’ appears in both Chinese and English, and the coin’s year of minting, 2023, also features on this side of the coin.

The Lunar series is one of the Perth Mint’s most popular coin series. The silver Lunar Rabbit coin is avialable in a range of sizes, including ¼ ounce, 2 ounce, 5 ounce, and 1 kilogram sizes. The coin is also available in gold and in platinum.

About the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint is the official mint of Australia, and is responsible for manufacturing all currency coinage for the country in addition to its precious metals coins. Founded in 1899, the mint was originally part of the Royal Mint, and was responsible for converting gold that was mined in Australia into gold sovereigns that could be used and traded throughout the British Empire. The mint became fully independent of the Royal Mint in the early 1980s. In addition to its lunar coin series, the mint is also well known for its Kangaroo coin, which is available in gold, silver and platinum.
