Design of the 100 Corona Gold Coin
The front of each coin depicts an image of Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I, emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The reverse of the coin features an image of the coat of arms of Austria in the center of a double headed eagle. One eagle head faces east, and the other west. The shield inscribed on the coin is the official shield of the Hapsburg family, who were the Empire's ruling family. The coin's face value of 100 Corona, and its year of minting are located on the bottom of the coin.

About the 100 Corona Gold Coin
The coin was initially introduced in 1892 as part of the gold standard introduced in the Austro-Hungarian empire by Franz Josef I. The coin was minted until 1916. In 1975, the Austrian Mint relaunched the production of the Corona coin as a restrike. All coins issued since 1975 are minted with the year 1915 inscribed on them. The coins are still minted today as restrikes.

Franz Josef I was one of Europe's longest rulers, and he reigned over the Austro-Hungarian empire for 67 years, from 1848 until 1916. After his death, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was split up.

These coins were one of the few that were around in the 1970s to compete with the popularity of the South African Krugerrand. However, the coin's popularity remained predominantly in Europe.

About the Austrian Mint
