Design of the British Sovereign
The front of the sovereign features an image of the reigning British Monarch at the time of issue. Soverigns may feature Queen Elizabeth II, King George IV, King George V, King Edward VII or Queen Victoria depending on the year of issue. The portraits of the leaders were updated periodically throughout their reigns in order to reflect a contemporaneous image - therefore, multiple images of the same ruler appear on the fronts of the coins.

The design on the reverse of the British Sovereign coin can vary. The reverse of a standard issue coin features an image of King George on a horse with a sword, slaying a dragon. Some sovereigns, such as those issued in a Jubilee year, feature the Royal Coat of Arms, complete with the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland on either side of the crest. The year of minting is located underneath the image on the back of all sovereigns.

*Please note that due to the differing designs on Sovereigns, the coin delivered to you may vary in design from that in the image.*

History of the Gold Sovereign Coin
The British Sovereign was initially introduced into the market in 1817, and until 1932, it was fully circulated as a British gold standard currency. Today, the coin is primarily used as a collectible British bullion coin.

Throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, the Soverign coin came to be recognised worldwide, particularly at major trade ports run by the British. In several British commonwealth territories, such as Canada and Australia, there were significant gold reserves. The Royal Mint set up branches in these locations in order to convert the mined bullion into gold Sovereigns, which could continue to be traded from those territories. Throughout its issue, the gold Sovereign has been produced in South Africa, India, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. Older gold Sovereigns are marked with a small letter indicating the location where they were minted. Each British full Sovereign gold coin contains 7.32 grams of gold. The British Sovereign also comes in half Sovereign, quarter Sovereign and double Sovereign sizes, and is minted only in gold.

Today, Sovereigns are only produced by the Royal Mint, located in the United Kingdom. In addition to the Sovereign, the Royal Mint also produces the British Britannia and the Queen's Beasts gold coins, which are both available in gold and silver. The Britannia series is also available in platinum.

The British Sovereign gold coin is popular worldwide. Many gold investors looking to buy gold coins in small increments over time purchase Sovereigns, as they contain only 7.3 grams of gold. Furthermore, for UK residents these coins carry not capital gains tax or VAT.
