Design of the 2022 Gold Sovereign Coin
The 2022 Gold Sovereign features an image of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. Circling her image are the words 'Queen Elizabeth II'. The reverse side of the coin features a special design in order to commemorate the Jubilee Year, which marks Her Majesty's 70th year as Queen. This special image is a portrait of the Royal Coat of Arms, which includes the Lion of England on the left side, and the Unicorn of Scotland on the right. The center depicts the official Royal Crest. The bottom of the coin features the year of minting - 2022.

The British gold Sovereign is unique in that it does not have a legal tender value imprinted on it. This is because its value was equivalent to 1 Pound at the time the coin was released. The coin's design has essentially remained the same since its release in 1817. Each British Sovereign gold coin contains 7.3 grams of gold bullion.

History of the Gold Sovereign
The gold sovereign coin was issued as standard British currency from 1817 until 1932 when Britain abandoned the gold standard. At the time of the British Empire, these coins were particularly popular, and used for trade at ports around the world, including in India, Australia and Canada. Because these coins contain gold bullion, their value was recognised worldwide.

Today, the British Sovereign is used more for investing and collecting than for trade, although it is still backed by the United Kingdom. The British Sovereign also comes in half Sovereign, quarter Sovereign and double Sovereign sizes, and is minted only in gold. The most popular size is the full Sovereign. The coin is only manufactured in gold.

Other Coins issued by the Royal Mint
Sovereigns are currently produced by the Royal Mint in varying sizes. The mint is responsible for manufacturing official UK coinage in addition to its bullion coins. Other bullion coins issued by the Royal Mint with legal tender value include the British Britannia series, which is available in gold, silver, and platinum, as well as a number of special edition coins.

Buying Gold Sovereigns
These coins are very popular among gold investors in Europe, and particularly UK residents, as no Capital Gains Tax is payable on any profits on the coins. Furthermore, they are recognised worldwide, particularly in Commonwealth nations. Many investors looking to buy gold coins as part of an investment plan regularly buy gold Sovereigns in regular increments in order to build up a precious metals portfolio over time.
