Design of the 2023 Silver Elephant Coin
The Somalian Silver Elephant coin was first released in 2004, and this is the 19th year that the coin is in production. The Elephant is part of the country’s ‘African Wildlife’ series, which also includes a coin with an image of a Leopard on the front.
The front of each Somalian Elephant silver coin features the Somalian coat of arms. In the center of the coin is Somalia’s shield, which includes a single five-point start in the centre. On either side of the point is a leopard standing on a spear. Both Leopards face the shield in the centre. At the top of the coin, the words ‘Somali Republic’ are written. On either side of the shield are the coin’s year of minting, which is 2023. At the bottom of the coin, the coin’s face value is inscribed. Each 1 Ounce silver Elephant coin has a legal tender value of 100 Somalian Shillings.
The reverse side of the coin feature an image of an African Elephant. This item is updated annually, which gives these coins some additional numismatic value on top of their silver value. This year’s coin features an adult Elephant grabbing some leaves to eat off the branch of a tree with his trunk. The sun is blazing down in the background, and there is a Baobab tree standing alone in the distance. The top of these coins feature the name of the series – ‘African Wildlife’. On the left side of the coin the word ‘Elephant’ is inscribed. On the right hand side, the coin’s purity of 999.9 and its weight of 1 ounce can be found.
The Somalian Elephant coin is issued in both gold and silver. The silver coin is available in both a 1 ounce and 1 kilogram size. The gold coin can be purchased in a 1 ounce and 1/10 ounce size.
The Somalian Elephant series is minted by the Bavarian state mint. This mint is one of 5 mints in Germany, and also boasts being Bavaria’s oldest company. It was established in 1158. The mint is responsible for manufacturing a number of bullion coins on behalf of private companies or foreign governments. Despite the presence of a number of mints in the country, Germany does not manufacture its own precious metal coin series.
This Somalian Elephant coin listing is for a tube of 20 coins. These coins come in a tube with a blue top direct from the mint. Because the coins are 2023 issue, they are in brilliant, uncirculated condition. Individual coins can also be purchased, and are supplied in their own plastic slip.
