Design of the 2022 Silver Krugerrand Coin
The silver Krugerrand coin features an image of Paul Kruger, one of South Africa’s most famous politicians, on the front. Circling his portrait is the word ‘South Africa’, written in both English and in Afrikaans.
On the reverse side of the coin is a Springbok, which is native to the country. The top of the coin features the word ‘Krugerrand’ and the reverse also features the coin’s year of minting and weight.
A History of the Krugerrand Series
The Krugerrand coin series was first launched in 1967 by the Rand Refinery in South Africa. The refinery originally only sold Krugerrand coins in gold, however in 2016 both a silver and a platinum Krugerrand were added to the series. The coin features the same images each year, and does not change. The gold Krugerrand coin is the best selling gold coin of all time, with more than 50 million minted and circulated since their launch.
The silver Krugerrand is the first silver bullion coin to be issued by the Rand Refinery, and it was designed to compete with the ever popular silver Maple Leaf series issued by the Royal Canadian Mint.
